FIVE into FOUR
Sara Flynn, Liam Flynn, Frances Lambe,
Nuala O'Donovan and Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill
Oliver Sears Gallery is pleased to announce the launch of a group exhibition of five of Ireland’s leading makers in craft. Set in the four rooms of the Oliver Sears Gallery on Molesworth Street, Frances McDonald has brought her intimate knowledge of the world of Irish Craft to an exquisitely curated show, which features work in ceramics, metal and wood. All the artists, who are exhibiting their most recent work, have shown internationally, in gallery exhibitions and at art fairs and all have been collected by major institutions and important private collections. Simply put, they are masters of their discipline.
Sara Flynn from Cork who recently exhibited with Erskine, Hall and Coe in London will show vessels from her ‘Pressed, ‘Gesture’ and ‘Flection’ series. Her work not only deals with her enjoyment of porcelain and the process of throwing but also with her continued fascination with the theme of the vessel.
Following his extraordinary retrospective in the Hunt Museum, Limerick in 2011, Liam Flynn will present his interpretation of the vessel in turned ash.
Dundalk based Frances Lambe is most influenced by the sea in all its guises. Her delicately patterned abstract sculptures recall landscape shaped by the sea or creatures that live in it. Frances showed at the Future Beauty exhibition at the National Craft Gallery, Kilkenny in 2013.
Nuala O’Donovan who, with the other four artists, participated in Dubh/Dialogues in Black at the Oliver Sears Gallery in January 2012, is a ceramic artist whose sculptural forms take much from patterns that occur in nature. For this exhibition she has created groups of forms that demonstrate the incremental developments that comprise the making of a complete series.
While Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill also focuses on the vessel form, his exploration in metal is largely driven by research into special alloys and patination techniques, old and new. For this exhibition he has created works in silver as well as copper and gold alloys.
Oliver Sears Gallery would like to thank Frances McDonald for her contribution to the exhibition and acknowledge the support of the Crafts Council of Ireland's External Exhibition Fund.
